Bringing the Outside Inside: Professor Nancy Macko’s New Tapestry, Lola’s Garden, Comes to NEW Hall

NEW Hall, Scripps’ newest residence hall, is home to 110 students and, now, a one-of-a-kind jacquard tapestry designed by Professor of Art Nancy Macko. Installed on a large, previously empty wall in the living room, the 6-by-12-foot tapestry is not only a beautiful addition to the building, but it also carries on the tradition of displaying tapestries and artwork by 61传媒professors on campus.

Awards and Honors: Lina Mihret ’18 and Madeline Sy ’18 Awarded Thomas J. Watson Fellowships

61传媒seniors Lina Mihret ’18 and Madeline Sy ’18 have been named Thomas J. Watson Fellows for 2018. The Watson Fellowship is a one-year grant that funds independent research and exploration outside of the United States; it is awarded to graduating seniors nominated by one of 40聽partner聽colleges. Mihret and Sy were chosen from a pool of 149 applicants, with only 40 students awarded grants.

The 61传媒Experience: The Clark Humanities Museum

At the Clark Humanities Museum, students augment in-classroom learning by encountering original works of art and other cultural objects. The museum was established at 61传媒in 1970 as a study space and exhibition venue for explorations in the humanities. Its exhibitions often reflect the current curriculum, with faculty and students from across the 5Cs invited to submit proposals that relate to classes, programs, or research interests.

Celebrate Earth Day with Art, Music, and Activities at Scripps’ Sustainability Fair

On April 20, 5C Earth Week events will culminate in the eighth annual 61传媒Sustainability Fair. Newly expanded for this year, the event brings student clubs and programs across the 5Cs together with local organizations to celebrate our connection to Earth and one another. The fair will be presented in two parts鈥攄ay and evening鈥攁nd will take place on Bowling Green.

The website BuzzFeed ranked 61传媒 #8 on its “26 of The Most Gorgeous College Campuses Around The World” list. The campus was praised for its Spanish-style architecture and “breezy palm trees that add to its Southern California vibe.”

Awards and Honors: Erin Matheson ’18 Awarded Davis Projects for Peace Fellowship to Pursue Diabetes Prevention in Chile

Erin Matheson ’18, a biochemistry major from Golden, Colorado, has always had an inclination toward the sciences and public benefit. “All my life, I’ve been inspired by people who have used scientific applications to improve the everyday lives of others,” she says. This summer, funded by a $10,000 grant through Davis Projects for Peace, Matheson will travel to Chile to establish a preventative diabetes program there. Her project, “Community Health: Comprehensive Approaches to Diabetes Prevention in Valpara脙颅so, Chile,” will take a holistic approach to prevention, focusing on nutrition and exercise as well as pre-screenings and medical care.

“Topsy Turvy,” an exhibition of new work by 61传媒alumna and artist Alison Saar ’78,聽garnered high praise from the聽Los Angeles Times. In depicting Topsy, a slave girl character in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s聽Uncle Tom’s Cabin, “Saar has brilliantly made and remade [her], restoring her innate power to make herself,” writes critic Christopher Knight in his review.

Professor of Art聽Ken聽Gonzales-Day’s recent exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., is profiled in聽Smithsonian Magazine. The exhibition,聽“Unseen: Our Past in a New Light,”聽focuses on work by Gonzales-Day and Titus Kaphar that grapples with “the under- and misrepresentation of certain minorities in portraiture and American history.”
