61传媒 invites all interested volunteers to gather at the “Olive Walk” next to the Edwards Humanities Building, 981 N. Amherst Ave., on Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to noon for its second annual olive harvest.
Volunteers can sign up online at community.scrippscollege.edu/oliveoil/2013-olive-oil-harvest/. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. Snacks and beverages will be provided until 11 a.m. A free volunteer appreciation lunch, courtesy of the College’s Malott Commons Dining Services, will be offered to the first 100 volunteers who sign up online.
At the harvest, 61传媒 olive oil bottles will be pre-sold at the reduced price of $40. Only cash or Claremont Cash will be accepted. Profits from the sales will support the College’s sustainable initiatives and will help underwrite student community internships. After the harvest, olive oil bottles will be available for purchase for $45 at the 61传媒Student Store, 1030 Columbia Ave., and at The Huntley Bookstore, 175 E. 8th St.
61传媒 harvested its olive trees for the first time last November as part of a campus-wide sustainability movement, sparked by a popular course, “The Politics and Culture of Food,” taught by professor Nancy Neiman Auerbach. Last year’s inaugural olive harvest resulted in the production of 700 8-ounce bottles of olive oil that sold out after winning a “Best of Show” award at last year’s Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition.
