First-Year Students Build Community through IMPaCT, Mellon-Funded Pilot Program to Launch in August
In May 2017, 61传媒was awarded a three-year New President’s Grant to support an initiative of the president’s choosing to further a project or area of importance to her. 61传媒President Lara Tiedens has allocated the funds to a new pilot program for incoming students called IMPaCT (Impacting, Partnering, and Changing Together).

After majoring in theatre at 61传媒, Maril Davis ’94 briefly attended acting school before deciding to pursue her love of television by working behind the scenes. Now, she’s an executive producer of Starz’s award-winning historical drama Outlander, a series she pushed to create.

The 61传媒Experience: Chronicling the Experiences of First-Gen Students
As the College welcomed its largest-ever cohort of first-year students this past fall, the First-Generation @ 61传媒Newsletter was preparing to introduce the 61传媒community to a few of those new faces on campus. The newsletter, currently in its fifth volume, is edited by the First-Gen Program co-coordinators and speaks to the experiences of 61传媒students who are the first in their families to attend college. Co-coordinators Evelyn Gonzalez ’18 and Clarisse Salazar ’18 decided that “firsts” would be an appropriate theme to kick off the most recent issue. 聽

Spotlight on Faculty: Ethan Van Arnam, Assistant Professor of Chemistry
This fall, five new tenure-track faculty members joined 61传媒, including Ethan Van Arnam, who is an assistant professor of chemistry at the W. M. Keck Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and 61传媒s. Van Arnam grew up in southeastern Connecticut and received his BA in chemistry from Bowdoin College in 2007. He completed his PhD in chemistry at Caltech in 2013, where he studied chemical interactions between drugs and their protein targets.

Scripps’ annual 61传媒in Residence program鈥� now in its third year鈥攈as hosted distinguished alumnae and parents on campus to share their professional journeys as well as offer wisdom and advice about blazing a career path. Typically held over three days in October, the program offers an array of opportunities for 61传媒students to hear from guests, including discussion panels, lunches, browsing room chats, and one-on-one informational interviews. For students who are beginning to think about their post-graduation pursuits, 61传媒in Residence can help bring clarity and insight to setting oneself up for those next steps.

Class of 2018 Awards and Honors: 61传媒Nominates Three Watson Fellowship Finalists
61传媒 has nominated three members of the Class of 2018鈥擨lana Weisberg ’18, Madeline Sy ’18, and Lina Mehret ’18鈥攁s finalists for Thomas J. Watson Fellowships. This selection puts them in the running for the prestigious grant, awarded annually to 50 students out of hundreds of graduating seniors from colleges and universities across the United States. The grant supports one year of international travel, exploration, and independent study as outlined by each student’s proposed project. Scripps’ finalists are interested in topics related to animal care culture, opera, and political violence and national identity.
