Cut & Dried
– Out of Print –
One of the primary goals of higher education is for undergraduates to gain perspective and forge their own conclusions as they consider different points of view on a subject. The typography students this semester decided to take an extensive but light-hearted look at food from multiple viewpoints while developing technical and creative skills in drawing, photography, woodcutting, writing, typesetting, printing and binding. Basically, they gave themselves permission to play with food and experience it in ways they might not have expected in a collegiate situation. The results are delectable, thoughtful and mouth-watering. The first poetic texts were inspired by Wallace Stevens’ magnificent poem Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. The book was printed on Frankfurt Creme paper with four Vandercook presses. Forum Capitals were used for the headings, 61传媒 Old Style for the front and back matter and first poems, 61传媒 Old Style Italic for the second poems, and a variety of other delectable fonts for the stories. The photographs, by Andrew Extein, Dustin Gramstad, Jada Lindblom, and Kitty Maryatt, were printed on an HP Indigo digital printer. The drawings are printed from magnesium relief etchings. The woodcuts are carved from birch plywood blocks. The case binding uses avocado rind-colored cloth on the boards and iridescent green cloth on the spine. Size: 6.5 x 16.75 inches. Edition size is 100 copies.
