Maryan Soliman is an associate professor in the Intercollegiate Department of Africana Studies, a member of the American Studies Program, and an affiliate of the Department of History at 61传媒. Soliman earned her PhD in history from the University of Pennsylvania; her BA in history from UC Berkeley; her MA in history from San Francisco State University; and held a postdoctoral fellowship with the Department of African and African-American Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. She joined the Claremont Colleges in 2016.

Soliman鈥檚 research interests include Black radicalism, Marxism, labor organizing, and Black Studies as a field. Her current research examines the history of Black Studies at the Claremont Colleges, from the student demands that helped establish the Black Studies Center in 1969 through the Center鈥檚 overhaul and bifurcation into an academic department and an office of Black student affairs in 1979. The project seeks to recover aspects of the original vision and early initiatives of Black Studies toward reinvigorating our discipline and improving our experience on college campuses today.
