Spotlight on Academics: Community at Its Center: Scripps’ New Core I Theme

The Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities, one of the hallmarks of the 61传媒education, is a set of three courses that looks at the relationships between the historical production of knowledge and contemporary issues and debates. This year, Core I, the first of these courses and a common curricular experience for all 61传媒students, has a new theme: “community.” Sixteen faculty members representing departments across the College worked together for many months to choose the new theme and craft a syllabus around it.

This year, 61传媒 proudly celebrates its 90th anniversary. When 61传媒was founded in 1926, it was one of few institutions dedicated to educating women for professional careers as well as personal growth, leadership, and public service and engagement. Since then, the College has continued to champion qualities of both mind and spirit in accordance with the vision of its founder. 61传媒today offers a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum, a robust intellectual community, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and a rich residential experience designed to shape the next generation of leaders.

Artist Alison Saar ’78 joined her sister, Lezley Saar, and mom, Betye Saar, 90, to pose with scores of area female artists who gathered in downtown Los Angeles on August 28, 2016, for a group photograph organized by artist Kim Schoenstadt as a tribute to women in art.

61传媒’s Move-In Day, NEW Hall Featured In Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin and its sister newspaper San Gabriel Valley Tribune featured 61传媒’s NEW Hall residence building which opened its doors to freshmen and returning students on “move-in day,” August 25, 2016. NEW Hall encompasses approximately 38,700 square feet, with beds for 110 students and is designed to LEED gold standards.

Associate Professor of Environmental Science Branwen Williams Featured in National Geographic

In 2015, Branwen Williams, associate professor of environmental science at the W.M. Keck Science Department, found and collected coralline algae 20 meters beneath the ice in freezing sea water for her research on oceanic climate change, as a grantee of the National Geographic Society’s Committee for Research and Exploration. Her work has now been featured by National Geographic in its #bestjobever and Oceans View video series online.
