Our studies of chromosome structure have led to the unexpected finding that our environment can profoundly influence the way our genes are expressed, and perhaps may alter gene expression in subsequent generations.聽 This topic, a subfield of Epigenetics, is fast evolving, with new findings reported monthly.聽 These ideas range from the effects of smoking on our DNA, how a short period of famine may alter the health of subsequent generations, and the effect of BPA (recently banned from baby bottles) on one’s DNA and wellbeing.聽 This talk will investigate the responsibility we may have towards our genome by distilling the current scientific knowledge and considering it in the context of our daily lives.
