61传媒 Women Present “Women on Fire”

The Asian/Asian American Student Union of 61传媒 will present “Women on Fire” featuring Leilani Chan, Jude Narita, and Denise Uyehara. Saturday, April 25, 1998 at 8:00 p.m. in Balch Auditorium. According to Vanessa Lee, project coordinator, the evening will feature performances by three of Los Angeles’ “most fierce, fresh, and passionate artists.” Admission is free for Claremont Colleges students, faculty, and staff: $2 for community.

Leilani Chan will perform excerpts from her groundbreaking solo piece, “E Nani I Ke Kumu: Look to the Source.” The performance fuses together hula, theater and performance art to expose the struggles of identity, displacement and survival in today’s Hawaii, a colonized land.

Jude Narita will perform excerpts from her repertoire of critically acclaimed one-woman shows which include “Coming into Passion: Song for a Sansei,” “Stories Waiting to be Told” and “Walk the Mountain.” Her work shatters stereotypes as it celebrates the lives and expectations of vastly different Asian women.

Denise Uyehara returns to the Claremont Colleges with excerpts from her critically acclaimed “Hello (sex) Kitty: Mad Asian Bitch on Wheels” and from her new, as of yet untitled cross-media/narrative work. “This award winning artist continues to explore what it means to be a queer bi woman, an Asian American and a human being,” said Lee.
