The European Union Center of California presents a distinguished panel of experts who will discuss the roles of the European Union and the United States in the Middle East peace process. The panel discussion “Peacemakers? The EU and US in the Middle East,” will be held on Monday, October 27, at 4:15 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons, at 61传媒. Panelist Dr. Edward Haley is Professor of Government at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California. Haley is the W.M. Keck Foundation Chair of International Strategic Studies for the Claremont Colleges. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. His commentaries, ranging on topics from 9/11 to Bush’s State of the Union Address, have been published in the Los Angeles Times and featured on the NPR Morning Edition.
Panelist Dr. Bassam Tibi is an Erma Taylor O’Brien Visiting Professor at 61传媒. His regular appointment is at the University of Goettingen, Germany, where he heads the Department of International Relations. Professor Tibi studied social science, philosophy, and history at the University of Frankfurt, where he earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy and History. In 1981, Tibi became the youngest fully established professor in Germany. Dr. Tibi is the author of twenty-five books on Islamic civilization and interactions between Middle Eastern and Western cultures and value systems. His books have been translated into 13 languages. In 1995, he was awarded the Medal of State First Class by German President Roman Herzog. He was also named “Man of the Year” in 1997 by the American Biographical Institute.
Panelist Dr. Nadav Morag is Director of the Center for Israel Studies at the University of Judaism and Chair of the University’s Department of Political Science. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from UCLA and a PhD from Tel Aviv University in Political Science. He was on the faculty of Tel Aviv University from1994 to 2003 and has taught courses on Israeli politics, international terrorism, Israeli foreign policy and international relations. He has published articles focusing on the Arab-Israeli and Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations and on water issues in Israel. Dr. Morag also served as Senior Director for Domestic Policy and as Senior Director for Foreign Policy at Israel’s National Security Council, where he developed policy recommendations on matters of National Security for the Prime Minister.
Dr. Lako Tongun, Associate Professor of International and Intercultural Studies and Political Studies at Pitzer College, in Claremont, California, will moderate the panel. Dr. Tongun earned his B.A. at St. Mary’s College of California and his M.A. and Ph. D. from the University of California, Davis. Having lived in Southern Sudan until 1962, when he fled during Sudan’s first civil war, Tongun is an expert in the field of African international and domestic relations. He is frequently a guest speaker and participant in international conferences, particularly on the subject of Africa and Sudan.
