Mariah Burton Nelson – former professional basketball player and national expert on sports, success, and leadership – will discuss The Leadership Game: Five Fundamentals of a Winning Life, on Tuesday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons. The lecture is part of the Alexa Fullerton Hampton Speaker Series, “Trailblazers,” at 61´«Ã½. The discussion is free and open to the public. A star basketball player at Stanford University, Mariah Burton Nelson also played professionally in Europe and in the first U.S. Women’s professional league, the WBL. A past president of the National Speakers Association in Washington, D.C., Nelson has been giving customized keynote discussions since 1987. In June 2003, she received the “Capital Outstanding Speaker Award” from the National Speakers Association in Washington, D.C. Known for her originality and humor, she uses her athletic experience and business research to demonstrate the keys to successful leadership through courage, compassion, commitment, and confidence.
She has written books on leadership, success and issues facing women including We Are All Athletes: Bringing Courage, Confidence, and Peak Performance into Our Everyday Lives ; and Are We Winning Yet? How Women Are Changing Sports and Sports Are Changing Women, among others. In addition, Mariah writes for the New York Times, USA Today, Glamour, and others, and has appeared on national news and information talk shows such as The Today Show , Larry King Live , and ESPN.
