Flora Thornton Symposium in Bioethics and Policy: “Engineering in Life”

The European Union Center of California at 61传媒 and Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences (KGI) announced today the 2003 Flora Thornton Symposium in Bioethics and Policy to be held Friday, May 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Pickford Auditorium, The Bauer Center, Claremont McKenna College. This event is free and open to the public.

“Engineering Life: Bioscience and Ethics in a Global Context” will examine—from a global perspective—the ethical issues at the intersection of science, business, politics, medicine and society as they relate to transgenic research. Special consideration is given to the differences in bioscience regulatory regimes in the United States and the European Union.

Panelists slated to attend include: Dr. Mich Hein, CEO, Chromatin Inc; Dr. Peter Sandoe, professor of bioethics at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University and the director of the Center for Bioethics and Risk Assessment, Copenhagen; Dr. David Galas, Chancellor/Chief Scientific Officer, Keck Graduate Institute; and Mr. Rahul Dhanda, Interleukin Genetics.

The Flora L. Thornton Symposium in Bioethics and Policy at Keck Graduate Institute is made possible by a generous gift from the Flora L. Thornton Foundation.

Part of a network of European Union Centers nationwide, the EU Center of California, housed on the 61传媒 campus, seeks to promote education, scholarly research, and public understanding of European integration and its consequences.

Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) is the first American graduate school dedicated exclusively to applied life sciences. KGI’s mission is to pursue educational programs and research aimed at translating into practice, for the benefit of humanity, the power and potential of the life sciences. Research undertaken at Keck Graduate Institute builds on and creates a wide range of practical applications for the insights into the fundamental processes of life emanating from the nation’s research laboratories. KGI is located in the eastern San Gabriel Valley of southern California and is one of seven colleges of the prestigious Claremont Colleges Consortium.
