Ex-guerilla commander and El Salvadoran congresswoman Maria Serrano will speak at 61传媒 in Balch Auditorium on Tuesday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. as part of Women’s History Month, sponsored by the Intercollegiate Women’s Studies Teaching and Research Center of the Claremont Colleges. Serrano will bring troubling questions to the practice of women’s rights across international borders.

Prior to Serrano’s talk, the documentary “Maria’s Story” will be shown, at 6:30 p.m. Produced by Pamela Cohen and Catherine M. Ryan, and directed by Manona Wali and Cohen, the 53-minute film is the intimate story of the 39-year-old mother of three and leader in the guerilla movement in El Salvador. The filmmakers spent seven weeks in Serrano’s temporary camp, under mortar fire and helicopter surveillance, to capture the story of the human side of this war. Recently, Serrano was elected to the Frente Farabundo Marti de Liberacion Nacional’s (FMLN) political commission.
