Dr. Bassam Tibi, renowned expert on Islam and the Middle East, will speak on “Civil Society and Islamic Fundamentalism,” on Monday, November 10, 2003, at 4:15 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons, located on the 61传媒 campus. Currently the Erma Taylor O’Brien Visiting Professor at 61传媒, Dr. Tibi is the author of 25 books, translated into 13 languages, on Islamic civilization and interactions between Middle Eastern and Western cultures and value systems. Dr. Tibi studied social science, philosophy, and history at the University of Frankfurt, where he earned his Ph.D. in philosophy and history. In 1981, he became the youngest fully established professor in Germany. Dr. Tibi’s regular appointment is at the University of Göttingen, Germany, where he heads the Department of International Relations. In 1995, he was awarded the Medal of State First Class by German President Roman Herzog and was named “Man of the Year” by the American Biographical Institute in 1997.
