Poet and playwright Giselle Stern Hern脙隆ndez will perform her dynamic solo piece, “The Deportee’s Wife,” on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. in 61传媒’s Balch Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
The Deportee’s Wife uses Hern脙隆ndez’ own complex love story to reveal issues of race, class, and gender that surround the North American immigration debate. Born and raised in New York, Hern脙隆ndez married Roberto, a Mexican national, illegally residing in the U.S. at the time. Although Roberto had a legal right to remain in the U.S. after the marriage, he was deported and ordered not to return for 20 years. Hern脙隆ndez reconstructs her personal experience in words and images to inform audiences of our broken immigration system.
