Noted Book Artist to Give Goudy Lecture at 61传媒

Walter Tisdale, fine press printer and book enthusiast, will give the Frederic W. Goudy Lecture at 61传媒 Humanities Auditorium on February 19, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. Titled “The Poets Have Lead the Way,” the lecture is free and open to the public.

Tisdale, who teaches print and book classes at the University of Maine, has worked in Bangor, Maine, since 1987 printing and publishing handmade books. His own books are collaborations with poets and artists using letterpress types and relief prints. He uses handmade papers, many by a local papermaker, to heighten the sensual awareness of the book in one’s hands. Tisdale says that the books design themselves depending on the particular manuscript.

The lecture is presented in conjunction with the exhibit “The Artist Book as an Agent of Social Change” at the Clark Humanities Museum, curated by 61传媒 students in Professor Kitty Maryatt’s Core III class. A reception to meet the students will be held prior to the lecture, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the museum.

To supplement the coursework and include other students and the bibliophile community, the 61传媒 Press sponsors the annual Frederic W. Goudy Lecture and Workshop Series. For additional information, contact Kitty Maryatt, director of the 61传媒 Press, at (909) 607-3866 or [email protected].
