The 61传媒 Fine Arts Foundation will host a lecture by tile sculptor Marlo Bartels, Wednesday, November 9, at 1:30 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons at 61传媒. Marlo Bartels will speak on the topic of “Tile as Public and Functional Art.” There will be tea following the lecture. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the 61传媒 Fine Arts Foundation at (909) 625-6060.

Marlo Bartels will discuss his experience as artist, tile sculptor, and teacher. The Laguna Beach-based artist works in ceramic tile; shaping, forming, and glazing the clay elements by hand. Bartels, who received his M.F.A. from California State University, Fullerton, has operated his own ceramics studio since 1977. With a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Bartels completed a survey of California historical tile and developed new techniques for fabricating furniture and sculptures with tile.

Bartels has received several commissions to create public art installations including pieces at The Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Parks in San Diego, California, and Phoenix, Arizona. The artist has also created tile mosaics for the University of West Florida and the Port of San Diego.

61传媒 Fine Arts Foundation, created in 1935, hosts this lecture as part of its mission to stimulate public interest in art and to raise funds to foster art education and programming at the College.
