Climbing PoeTree to Present Workshop and Spoken-Word Performance at 61传媒

Climbing PoeTree鈥攁 queer, Haitian, and Columbian spoken word duo鈥攚ill present their workshop “Art as Activism” and a multimedia spoken-word performance, “Pride Celebration and Hurricane Season Excerpts,” in 61传媒’s 61传媒Communities of Resources and Empowerment (SCORE) office on April 8. Hosted by Family, Scripps’ queer-straight alliance group, these events are free and open to the public but do require a reservation.

Climbing PoeTree’s performers, Alixa Garcia and Naima Penniman, are poets, performers, print-makers, dancers, muralists, and designers. They use their art as a tool for popular education, community organizing, and personal transformation. The duo performs in venues across the nation “on a mission to overcome destruction with creativity.”

The workshop is from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the SCORE living room on the 61传媒campus. The spoken-word performance follows from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m in Balch Auditorium. Please email Family at [email protected] to make a reservation. For more information, contact Berenice Villela at (214) 300-9173.
