Janet Koplos, art critic and senior editor at Art in America, will present a slide-lecture, "The Patterns of Abstraction," on Thursday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Auditorium on the 61传媒 campus. This event is free and open to the public.
A leading critic of contemporary art, Ms. Koplos has written more than 2,000 reviews and articles for a variety of industry publications and has been a contributing editor to New Art Examiner, Art Papers, and Fiberarts. She has served on the executive board of the International Art Critics Association and is a frequent art juror, panelist, and guest lecturer. The author of Contemporary Japanese Sculpture, Koplos has also lectured widely on Japanese sculpture and contemporary craft and was a key consultant on the Japanese collections at the Whitney Museum in New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
Sponsored by the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery and made possible by the Ames Fund, this lecture is presented in conjunction with the 58th 61传媒Ceramic Annual, currently on view until April 7, 2002. Nancy Selvin is this year’s guest curator, and she has selected pieces by 12 artists who create abstract sculptural forms in clay. This exhibition includes work by artists from England to Washington State, including Bean Finneran, Dennis Gallagher, Yoonchung Kim, Yih-Wen Kuo, Brad Miller, Kevin Nierman, Kathleen Royster, Robert Sperry, Andree Singer Thompson, Angela Verdon, Jamie Walker and Susan York. The Williamson Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 1-5 p.m, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is free.
