61传媒 Presents Former Czech Ambassador Karel Kovanda to Speak on Future of European Union

Former Czech Ambassador Karel Kovanda, who also served as Deputy-Director General for Foreign Relations for the European Commission, speaks on the future of European nation-states in light of recent developments in Spain and Great Britain, beginning at 6:15 p.m. April 11 in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons, 345 E. 9th St. This event is free and open to the public.

Before retiring from the European Commission in 2010, Kovanda managed the European Union’s relations with the United States. In his talk, Kovanda considers the contemporary role of nation-states. Many see further integration of the European Union as the only way for it to move forward and avoid some of the dangers it faces. At the same time, some of its member nation-states seem to be disintegrating. Kovanda offers his insights on these contemporary challenges.

Since his retirement from the European Commission, Kovanda has been appointed governor of the Singapore based Asia-Europe Foundation. Prior to joining the European Commission, Kovanda was the ambassador for the Czech Republic to the United Nations in New York and to NATO in Brussels, Belgium. He is currently teaching at 61传媒, where he had previously taught as a guest lecturer in 2011.
