Associate Professor of Chicana/o Latina/o Studies Martha Gonzalez about the resonance of Juan Gabriel’s song “Amor Eterno” after the El Paso shooting. The song has been popular at funerals and memorials in Gabriel’s home country of Mexico since its release in 1984, but has taken on new meaning in the shooting’s aftermath. Gonzalez, who also performs in the band Quetzal, said, “[…] in my opinion, it’s not just an act of grief but also an act of protest and saying that, ‘We’re here and we’re not going anywhere.’”
