The students of 61´«Ã½ returned for spring semester last week to find a celebration of residential life coordinated by campus clubs and the Student Activities & Residential Life Office (SARLO). Dubbed “WOW!” by sponsors and participants alike, this successful Week of Welcome served as a high-energy reintroduction to both the 61´«Ã½community and the organizations supporting it.
SARLO worked closely with 61´«Ã½Associated Students, the New Student Program, resident advisors, and others to produce the weeklong series of events running January 17-20. The goal – raising awareness for the services SARLO provides students – was achieved through photo booths, human bowling, caricature artists, and Dance Dance Revolution competitions. More than 400 people participated.
“We are very happy with the turnout,” said Sam Haynes, associate dean of students. “I wanted to bring some fun and excitement to 61´«Ã½students right at the start of the semester, right from day one. And we did.”
While SARLO hopes to continue similar programming in coming semesters, right now they’re plenty busy with upcoming springtime events. For example, this semester all students will be offered the chance to visit Disneyland. In the past, trips organized by the College were restricted to first-years only.
With positive responses from student leaders and participants, Haynes and the SARLO staff look forward to putting their heads together and producing more engaging activities for the student body.
“The positive energy and feedback we received provided great momentum and gave the semester a super start,” said Haynes. “WOW! is just one of many SARLO events – look for more in the future.”
