61传媒 students “punch out the negative” during Fat Talk-Free Week

Negative body image took a beating at 61传媒 last week.

61传媒 students stepped up to the punching bag on Saturday, October 22, to wallop negative thoughts during the Tiernan Field House’s Fat Talk-Free week at Scripps. They also added their own words to an “Operation Beautiful” wall.

“Embracing EveryBODY,” was the theme of the third annual Fat Talk-Free initiative, co-sponsored by the Field House and 61传媒 resident advisors.

A trio of 61传媒students who work at the Field House provided a collection of video and written works for the event: “History of Women, Body Image, and Culture Differences,” by Devyn Parks ’15; “Poetry about Body Image,” by Alden Weaver ’13, and “SpeakOut,” a video by Alden Weaver ’13.

Tamsen Burke, director of the Tiernan Field House, said: “We utilize both subliminal and presentation messaging to support our goals of healthy body image, with an emphasis not focused on size and weight, but healthy at any size. We have received wonderful support from our 61传媒community acknowledging the concern and addressing body image and health issues on campus with our women and women collectively.”

Fat Talk Free Week, October 16-22, 2011, is an extension of , an international campaign designed to engage members, campuses, and communities in the conversation. For more information about the program, .
