For the first time, 61´«Ã½ celebrates National Student Employee Appreciation Week, April 11-17, recognizing the importance and impact of student employees.
The student employees of 61´«Ã½ are its heartbeat, without whom the efficiency and the success of The College would collapse. This includes all those on work-study, interns, volunteers, tutors, paid and unpaid. These roughly 500 students positively influence 61´«Ã½ in a variety of ways, whether it’s welcoming visitors to campus, assisting their fellow students in the library, providing support to faculty, or serving a perfectly made Nonfat Sugar-Free Vanilla Latte to brighten someone’s morning.
The Career Consultant program, in which student employees manage daily drop-in hours, for example, enables CP&R to serve more students on a just-in-time basis. “They have become an indispensible part of meeting the needs of 61´«Ã½students,” says Associate Director Gretchen Maldonado. The program was originally created as a way to reduce the wait time for students, but CP&R also benefits in having the Career Consultants provide a student perspective on programs and services.
“The Office of Admission simply could not run without student employees and volunteers,” adds Laura Stratton, Director of Admission. “Our student employees are integral in processing applications, greeting prospective students and families, and answering questions from a student perspective. We feel so lucky to have the amazing support of our student employees and volunteers — they are the best!”
Working on campus offers students an opportunity to gain transferable skills and build positive work habits, and therefore, better prepare for life after graduation. In many cases, students use their wages to help pay for educational expenses which decreases their debt when they graduate.
61´«Ã½ celebrates this week to acknowledge the value of student employment. In recognition of their valuable contribution to The College, on campus students employees will receive a special treat during this week. Read more on other free or low-cost ways to show your support.
