61传媒Events: Humanities Institute Hosts “The ‘War on Terror’: 15 Years Later”

This semester, the 61传媒 Humanities Institute will present a series of programs around the theme “The 芒鈧淲ar on Terror’: 15 Years Later.” Professor of Anthropology and chair of the department Lara Deeb, who directs the institute, hopes to encourage students to look critically at U.S. policies, both abroad and at home, related to the “global war on terror” that President George W. Bush declared after the 2001 al-Qaeda attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Deeb has organized a series of workshops and discussions featuring scholars, activists, and artists whose work focuses on or intersects with issues such as foreign policy, immigration, national security, and civil liberties.

Spotlight on Faculty: Marino Forlino, Assistant Professor of Italian

Forlino graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florence, Italy, in modern foreign languages and literatures and earned his MA and PhD degrees in Italian at Rutgers University. He also speaks, and has taught, German and Arabic, and holds a graduate diploma in American studies from Smith College. He joins 61传媒from California State University, Fullerton, where he served as multi-area full time lecturer in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

Spotlight on Faculty: Carlin Wing, Assistant Professor of Media Studies

This fall, 11 new tenure-track faculty members joined 61传媒, including two at the W.M. Keck Science Department. As part of our ongoing series on Scripps’ faculty, the Office of Marketing and Communications recently sat down with Assistant Professor Carlin Wing, the first full-time tenure-track professor of media studies at Scripps.

Wing earned her AB in visual and environmental studies and social anthropology at Harvard University, her MFA in photography and media at California Institute of the Arts, and her PhD in media, culture, and communication at New York University. Her areas of interest include media and communication, science and technology, material culture, globalization, performance, disability, and play, games, and sport. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, and has published writing in Games and Culture, Public Books, Cabinet, Art Lies, and The Bulletin of the Serving Library.

Spotlight on Faculty: Kevin Vennemann, Assistant Professor of German

This fall, 11 new tenure-track faculty members joined 61传媒, including two at the W.M. Keck Science Department. As part of our ongoing series on faculty, the 61传媒Office of Marketing and Communications recently sat down with Kevin Vennemann, assistant professor in the Department of German Studies. Vennemann received his BA and MA in literature and history from Free University of Berlin in 2006 and his PhD in German from New York University in 2015.

Spotlight on Academics: Community at Its Center: Scripps’ New Core I Theme

The Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities, one of the hallmarks of the 61传媒education, is a set of three courses that looks at the relationships between the historical production of knowledge and contemporary issues and debates. This year, Core I, the first of these courses and a common curricular experience for all 61传媒students, has a new theme: “community.” Sixteen faculty members representing departments across the College worked together for many months to choose the new theme and craft a syllabus around it.

This year, 61传媒 proudly celebrates its 90th anniversary. When 61传媒was founded in 1926, it was one of few institutions dedicated to educating women for professional careers as well as personal growth, leadership, and public service and engagement. 61传媒Campus: NEW Hall Scripps’ Newest Residence Is Now Open

Students, faculty, and staff who have been away for summer break may notice a big change on campus as they make their way back to the College this week. The green construction fences to the north of the Sallie Tiernan Field House are gone, and NEW Hall, Scripps’ newest residence hall, is open and ready for students and visitors. Under construction since May 2015, the residence will house first-years as well as returning students.
