Green Biking

After a summer of planning, organizing, and gathering equipment, this semester 61传媒 launched its first Green Bikes Program, a student-run organization that facilitates day or semester-long bike rentals as well as a bike repair service. The effort to organize the program was led by Kristen Piepgrass ’12 and Asia Morris ’12, who now work at the College’s new bike shop. “Bikes are meant to last a long time, and this is a great way to make sure that these bikes don’t go unused,” Piepgrass said.

When the idea for the program was proposed to members of the 61传媒Associated Students (SAS), it was received with unanimous support.

Scripps’ new program is expected to grow in the years to come through the efforts of Piepgrass, Morris, and student interest. The program’s aim is to empower women and teach them simple tricks to the bike-fixing trade.

“The goal is not to fix it for them immediately but to show them how,” Morris said. “This program has come out of a wish to increase bike culture on campus and stems directly from my love for bikes and knowing how to fix them myself, which I never thought I could do.”

The 61传媒 Green Bikes Program is housed in the Sallie Tiernan Field House parking garage.
