Amy Ellingson ’86 recently unveiled a 10-by-109-foot mural for San Francisco International Airport. Untitled (Large Variation), located in Terminal 3, is the largest public art commission in the airport’s collection.
The abstract mural is composed of colorful geometric patterns that repeat, suggesting a cadence or flow. “There is a rhythm in the piece, and a lot of movement, but also elements that are loosely symmetrical,” Ellingson remarked. “I designed it so that people can drift with the imagery, but also come back to a feeling of centeredness. I hope that viewers perceive a sense of generosity of spirit and intention, or a buoyancy, in the piece.”
