Once a year, Family Weekend draws hundreds of students and their families for an immersive 61传媒 event allowing families to appreciate 61传媒from their student鈥檚 point of view. Hosted by the Office of Parent Engagement and Philanthropy on February 15鈥17, this year鈥檚 Family Weekend program will offer a stimulating mix of popular activities plus new events that both first-time and returning attendees will be sure to enjoy.
Family Weekend showcases our impressive students鈥 achievements by sharing some of the ways in which they are engaged with the College. Throughout the weekend, families are able to attend everything from a Core class to a study abroad workshop to a challah braiding session with 61传媒Challah, one of many student clubs and organizations. 61传媒students introduce their families to their favorite professor and new friends, show them their favorite spot on campus, and share more about their unique 61传媒experience.
鈥淔amilies experience the vibrancy of the entire College during Family Weekend,鈥 says Director of Parent Engagement Casey Crosbie. 鈥淣ew families take away a broader perspective of Scripps鈥 purpose, and returning families see how the campus and student experience are developing similarly to their student鈥檚 individual growth.鈥
Parent and Family Engagement encourages families to register as early as possible to reserve space for Family Weekend鈥檚 most highly requested activities, like the popular 鈥淭aste of 61传媒Tour鈥 which explores the many edible fruits and plants that grow on campus and how they鈥檙e used in the community. This year, the number of family-favorite tours of the historical and botanical campus as well as tours of the Denison Library Rare Book Room have been doubled to accommodate more attendees.
New program highlights include a comedy performance from The Claremont Colleges鈥 improvisation theater company 5C Improv and a special 61传媒Presents event with Fresh Air鈥檚 book critic and fellow 61传媒parent Maureen Corrigan P鈥21 in conversation with R.O. Kwon, Scripps鈥 Mary Routt Chair in Creative Writing. In an expression of gratitude for our engaged families and their impact on Scripps鈥 student body and community, this year will also mark the inaugural presentation of the Parent Volunteer Award by President Lara Tiedens.
The building of community bonds will continue at regional family chapter receptions, group luncheons, and the program鈥檚 grand finale where all attendees gather for a family dinner and concert. Shares Crosbie, 鈥淎 successful Family Weekend is one where our families feel connected to 61传媒and leave inspired to participate in the community in a deeper way.鈥
