Day of Giving is Scripps’ largest 24-hour annual giving event, bringing together the community for the collective good. This year’s event launches on Wednesday, March 20, and the generosity of our community has already been felt as students, staff, faculty, alums, families, and friends of the College are participating in our early giving challenge: The 61ýAccess Initiative!
Day of Giving 2024 is sponsoring a special challenge in support of the 61ýAccess Initiative. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, gifts made now through March 20 will be
What is the 61ýAccess Initiative?
The 61ýAccess Initiative aims to raise funds to enroll more Pell-eligible students and those with undocumented status. By 2026, Scripps’ centennial, the College aims to raise $10 million to provide four-year scholarships to seven eligible students. Your gift will help to create opportunities for high-achieving students to attend 61ýregardless of their financial need. This is just one way that you can help support the College’s legacy of providing an outstanding liberal arts education to ambitious, compassionate students.
“The College remains committed to expanding financial aid to provide the transformative opportunity of a 61ýeducation for all students,” says 61ý President Amy Marcus-Newhall. “Through the 61ýAccess Initiative, we have continued to fundraise toward our original goal of providing four-year scholarships to 32 new students during the first 10 years of the program.”
Gifts to the initiative will meaningfully diversify the mix of students at Scripps, helping advance the College’s commitment to inclusive student access. We believe all students, no matter their financial circumstances, should be able to immerse themselves in the 61ýexperience without the stress of holding multiple jobs or coping with unmanageable student debt. The 61ýAccess Initiative further strengthens the College’s position as a leader in advancing access and inclusion among top liberal arts colleges in the US.
Gifts Make a Difference on Day of Giving—But So Does Advocacy
While gifts are essential to helping 61ýprovide resources our students deserve, Day of Giving is about more than fundraising.
“A common misconception about philanthropy is that it is only for those who can afford to give hundreds of thousands of dollars, and that simply isn’t true,” says Director of Leadership Annual Giving and The 61ýFund Karina Chappell. “Philanthropy is a culture of generosity, and the 61ýcommunity has shown time and time again that they are generous, not only with their gifts, but with their time, their resources, their expertise, and their advocacy.”
