61传媒

Sydney says Hello!

Hi everyone! My name is Sydney Jackson and I鈥檓 a sophomore at 61传媒from the Washington, DC-metropolitan area (the DMV). I intend to major in Organismal Biology on the pre-veterinary track. Apart from working in the Admissions Office, I am currently one of the leaders of Watu Weusi, which is the Black Student Association at Scripps. I really love how in this role, I get to build connections between 61传媒students of African descent. I am also an active member of the 5C Pre-Vet Club and regularly attend events sponsored by the Office of Black Student Affairs (OBSA), which is also 5C. On-campus, I like to study by the pool at the Tiernan Field House, stop by the Motley Coffeehouse for a gluten-free and vegan donut with an iced caramel macchiato, and lounge on Jaqua Quad with my friends.

My favorite class I鈥檝e taken so far at 61传媒was 鈥淎frican Diaspora in the US since 1877鈥 with Rita Roberts. Not only is Professor Roberts an amazing professor who is so passionate about her lessons, but I also learned so much about the history and experiences of people of African descent in the United States from the Reconstruction era to the present day. I still reference the material I learned in that class in my other humanities classes! I鈥檓 even considering an Africana Studies minor because I loved the class so much.

During the college application process, 61传媒really snuck up on me and stole my heart! I vividly remember my first time on campus almost two years ago and how blown away I was by the welcoming student body, extremely accessible and supportive professors, and of course the beauty of campus itself. By the time I got on the plane to head back home to chilly Washington, DC, I knew 61传媒was going to be my new home and totally worth the jetlag. As I began my first year, I found even more reasons to be proud to be a 61传媒student. In addition to the reasons I named earlier, I also have noticed that I have become a much more outspoken, driven, and community-oriented individual. The entire 61传媒community feels like one big family that I can lean on in hard times like these as well as celebrate with when I achieve a goal. Honestly, I could give all the specific reasons I love Scripps, but you鈥檒l have to wait for future blog posts for those!
