Hello, everyone! My name is Keila Joy FisherÌý‘21. I’m a senior from Monrovia, CA (about 30-40 minutes from campus). I am a double major in Psychology at 61´«Ã½and Theater at Pomona College.ÌýMy commitment to the theater department takes up quite a bit of my time, as I am also involved in the 5C club, The Green Room, which is a student-run theater company that puts on multiple productions a semester.ÌýWhen I am not rehearsing for a show on Pomona’s campus, I enjoyÌýrelaxing and eating lunch onÌýone of our many grassÌýareas or studying with my friends in a dorm Browsing Room.ÌýÌý
Every semester at 61´«Ã½has challengedÌýme, educated me beyond my expectations, and introduced me to some amazing people.ÌýThrough the CORE program, fulfilling my breadths of study requirements, and taking courses within my majors,ÌýI have been able to pursue every one of my interests and passions in some capacity.ÌýWith infinite time and space in my schedule, I would have also majored in English and Art History, but through the CORE programÌýand being able to study abroad in Florence, Italy, I have been able to satisfy my interestsÌýin both areas.ÌýThe courses offered at Scripps, andÌýinÌýthe consortium, are so engaging, that in many cases, students’ favorite coursesÌýareÌýoftenÌýoutside of their major departments. My all-time favorite class was You Vs the Garlic Bread She Tell You Not to Worry AboutÌýtaught byÌýAdam Novy,Ìýa writing course blending media studies with memes.ÌýWhile that sounds like a complete joke, my classmates and I participated in intellectual conversations about what constitutes art, and how it can be textually defined. My final paper wasÌý2,000 wordsÌýabout the band Smash Mouth and the Shrek franchise. I finished that class knowing that if I could writeÌý2,000ÌýwordsÌýanalyzing a handful of memes on a ridiculous subject withÌýscholarly sources to support my analysis,Ìýno college paperÌýaboutÌýa real topicÌýcould faze me.ÌýÌý
Now almostÌýfourÌýyearsÌýafterÌýI firstÌýtoured 61´«Ã½as a rising senior in high school, I could not be happier with my decision to attend this college. If I was given the opportunity to attend anyÌýuniversity or college in the worldÌýof my choosing, I wouldÌýstill choose Scripps. No institution is without its faults, but it is during those timesÌýin particularÌýthat I am just blown away byÌýthe intellect, passion, and determination of my peers. Attending 61´«Ã½means to be among a communityÌýof compassionate,Ìýskilled, and courageousÌýpeople ready and able to change the world for the better. To stand beside by peers as their equal is an honor.ÌýÌý
