Scripps’ Latinx affinity group, Café con Leche (CCL), helps provide a forum for discussion on economic, cultural, political and social issues in the Latinx community within and beyond 61´«Ã½. The group continually work to be an intersectional community, where Latinx folks of all backgrounds and walks of life are welcomed and embraced.
The story of Café con Leche, which translates to Coffee with Milk, starts with women in war0torn countries who were often thrones behind political movements. They often weren’t allowed to speak on political matters in traditional spaces, so they would host evening “café con leche”. This became a code for independent political discussion and organization. Serving also as a metaphor, coffee with various mixes of milk and cacao beans represent the variety of skin colors and ethnic makeups between Latinx people who gather and discuss today.
Recent CCL events include: Karaoke Night, collaboration with 7C Latin and Caribbean Dance Club and CCL, Galentines Day, 5CC Art Showcase, collaboration with the Denison Library to highlight limited edition Spanish and English language works and more!
