Art at the Claremont Colleges

Hiya everyone, I’m Alyssa, a double Art and Politics major here to talk about art-focused classes, clubs, and more across the colleges. I’ll leave some tips and a few of my own experiences down below!!

So, maybe this is your first semester at 61´«Ã½and you’re interested in the arts. However, the catalog has so many options that it can overwhelm you. I recommend that you reach out to upperclassmen and ask them detailed questions about topics, professors, etc.  Scripps’ Art department is fairly unique in that every semester they have an open house with food, faculty, and students in the major! By attending open events like this, I met Professor Davis who taught me ceramics for a year, and several others I know much more closely now. I will say, reach out to the professor for the specific class you want almost immediately! It can be difficult to land an Art class, even as an Art major, so don’t feel dejected if you can’t get in the first time, it’ll happen at its own pace, or with some luck like me.

  • Clubs

Now that you’ve landed an art class (maybe haha…) you have some free time and want to pursue some clubs as well. As a co-president of Potluck Zine, I’m here to tell you to join our club (once you’re admitted to Scripps, or maybe just because you want to submit pieces, which is also okay)! We’re a low-commitment club that meets once a week across the Colleges to collage. Come take a break from your homework, hang out with friends, listen to warm music, sometimes have yogurtland, and submit any form of art to our Zine every semester. From Birds, to Labor and Leisure, the themes vary, and as an honorary Potluckian, you have the opportunity on what you want to see. Check out the Instagram and submit when the time comes !! @potluckzine5c

  • Museums & Galleries

Across the 5Cs, we have around 5-7 different spaces for students/artists/student artists to exhibit their artwork!! Whether it be a Ceramic annual for the Ruth Williams Gallery at Scripps, or a Valentine’s special at the Benton Museum over at Pomona, the variety of showcases extends far and wide. Open to the public, students, staff, and others have the opportunity to attend receptions, meet faculty, and view art free of cost! If you’re ever free on a weekend, or weekday, check out these facilities, along with HMC’s Sprague and Pitzer’s Nichols and Lenzner galleries.
