Allison Joseph ’20 Sets Stage for Change through Activist Theater
Using activist theater, the 鈥淚deal Woman鈥 workshop explored women鈥檚 traditional and cultural roles in their communities. By the end of the workshop, armed with newfound confidence and creative props they鈥檇 made from nature, her students performed a five-act play which tackled issues they faced in their day-to-day lives, from navigating difficult relationships with their fathers to not being allowed to play sports with their male classmates.

Laspa Center for Leadership Executive Director Vicki Klopsch spoke to the Chronicle of Higher Education about Scripps鈥 financial literacy sessions. The Linda Davis Taylor Financial Literacy Program, organized by Laspa, is facilitated by 61传媒alumnae who discuss topics such as budgeting, salary negotiations, credit, and loans.

On Thursday, February 28, alumni, parents, students, and faculty from The Claremont Colleges gathered in 61传媒’s Hampton Room for the fourth annual Laspa Leadership Summit. Organized by the Laspa Center for Leadership, the summit was established to promote active dialogue about the nature of women’s leadership in the 21st century.

The conversation grew lively (as political conversations tend to do), and they both realized how critical it was to get as many 61传媒students registered to vote as possible.

This August, a week before nearly 900 students were scheduled to move in to the residence halls, more than 40 first-year students boarded buses on campus before dawn. They were headed to Los Angeles and the Inland Valley鈥攂ound to one of four nonprofit organizations鈥攖o participate in the inaugural launch of Scripps’ Impacting, Partnering, and Changing Together (IMPaCT) program.

This August, the Laspa Center for Leadership at 61传媒 held its second annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI), a four-day program designed to help students who hold leadership positions on campus鈥攎embers of student government, officers of campus clubs and organizations, peer mentors, residential advisors, and others鈥攈one their management abilities and develop community and coalition building skills.

In May 2017, 61传媒was awarded a three-year New President’s Grant to support an initiative of the president’s choosing to further a project or area of importance to her. 61传媒President Lara Tiedens has allocated the funds to a new pilot program for incoming students called IMPaCT (Impacting, Partnering, and Changing Together).
